In the Academies of Europe, the highest level of the painter's craft was considered to be the narrative painting: a multifigural work depicting historical or moral truths portraying political, religious or mythological characters. The annual Prix de Rome demanded this level of excellence from its student competitors. While my works have been more limited to academic color and romantic content, my long-term artistic goals are to pursue this long respected art form, but with a more romantic treatment of light and color. My goals are to combine an Academic basis of design, draftsmanship, and technical craftsmanship with an Impressionist/Social Realist sense of light, color and brushwork and an Illustrator's sense of staging, costuming, props and storytelling to produce Narrative Images depicting the human experience of life. |
